HUZZAH!

NEWSLETTER OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ROUND TABLE OF PHILADELPHIA

February 2010 EDITION

NEW MEETING LOCATION

The American Revolution Round Table of Philadelphia has a new meeting location. The Board of Directors has unanimously decided that we needed to go back to our old style of meeting site. Specifically a place where our members can have a meal or a drink with our presentation and be able to continue to discuss the presentation with the presenter while consuming their favorite beverage.

After a search of locations, we have decided that the Broad Axe Tavern, 901 Butler Pike, Ambler, Pennsylvania will be our new home beginning with our February 24, 2010 meeting. The Broad Axe Tavern dates back to 1681 and offers both sandwiches and full meals along with alcoholic beverages. Its website is www.broadaxetavern.com and telephone is 215-643-6300. It is located at the corner of Butler and West Skippack Pikes (zip code 19002). Parking in the rear. Do not park in the shopping center.

As with almost every 325+ year old building, the Broad Axe Tavern has its ghost legend. Our meetings are open to the public and we also hope the ghost named Rachel enjoys our talks. Please tell you friends of our new meeting location. We have some great scheduled of programs: Philadelphia’s revolutionary war defenses, receive training in revolutionary war spy technology, and a Pulitzer Prize winning author.

We want to thank Cathedral Village for being our home for the past year.

NEW Website Address

Our new website address is "arrtop.com". GEOCITIES website closed in October, we had to find a new host site. The Board of Directors agreed that we needed a better hosting option. We wanted ARRTOP to be available all the time which is not possible with a free hosting service. If possible the Board wanted to do away with advertisements on our site

I checked around and found us a hosting site at a good rate. ARRTOP will be available 24/7 and no advertisements. We have our own domain name now and it is arrtop.com. No www in the name.

It was a lot more work then I thought would be involved. There was so many lines of programing that had to be changed. It took about 14 hours of work. Just the first page has over 700 lines of programing in HTML to produce what you see. I had to delete some lines, add others, and change words in the lines. Also had to download everything including pictures and then upload everything to the new site and then fix what was not working.

BRING A FRIEND

Bring a friend to a meeting. We all know someone who is interested in history. Invite them to an ARRTOP meeting. Pick them up and give them a ride. We would love to meet them.

MEET SOMEONE

If you see someone new go and say hello.

MEMBERSHIP

We need your support. We pay for copying handouts, mailings etc. We also pay for the speaker and their spouse's dinners and in some cases their travel to Philadelphia when they are not from the area. You know what has happened to gas prices and so have our speakers. When we ask a speaker to come from Washington, DC or New York City or beyond, they negotiate for travel reimbursement in order to get them to come. We do not get public money for this. The money comes from your dues which is the source of our speaker budget. If you want great speakers, join today. Our treasurer is accepting dues for 2010. Pay early avoid the rush.

Dues is only $15.00 for the year.

If you want to join (Click here for an application.)

SPEAKERS YOU WANT?

I ask that you provide us with some input. Please provide us with a note telling us what speakers you want to see on the schedule.

DON'T BE BASHFUL - NEWS FROM AND ABOUT MEMBERS

If anyone of you within our membership and attendees is involved in any project related to our common interest in the Revolutionary War era, let ARRTOP know. Perhaps you are conducting research, or working as a volunteer or maybe you have had something published. Don't be shy, let us know. You never know who else may be interested or what it could lead to.

In order to speed things along, ARRTOP institued the policy that all reports will be handled by the President at the podium and not from the floor. If anyone has something that they would like to report about themselves or others contact me, John Nagy before the meeting starts.
